Irish Youth Open Swimming Championships - Day 4 Update

The long distance events kicked off the fourth and final day of the Irish Youth Open Swimming Championships at the National Aquatic Centre. Conor Donnelly (Leander swim club) produced an excellent result in the 17-18 year category to win the National title in 16.07.48 minutes, adding to his medal tally over the weekend.

The girls under 15 years 200m Individual Medley final was equally thrilling and came down to the final 50 metre leg.  In the 17 and over race Bethany Carson (Lisburn City) won the Irish title with an impressive 2.19.93 minute swim, behind Mandy Loots from CGA (2.18.50). Carson’s time is under the consideration standard for the Commonwealth Games in India this October.

Olympian Andrew Bree was in action in the 200m breaststroke prelims but did not swim the final due to jet-lag after arriving home on a flight from the US this morning. This meet concludes the Irish domestic National calendar for the ‘09/10 swimming season, but Ireland’s top swimmers (eight member squad) will be in action at the European Senior Championships in Budapest from 9-15 August, as well as the upcoming British Age-Group and Youth Championships in the coming weeks.
