Swim Ulster swimmers medal at the UK School Games

Swimmers from Ireland travelled to the UK School Games in Cardiff on 3rd September to compete against their peers from England, Scotland and Wales.

On arrival at Cardiff they were housed, fed and given their green and white kit and then attended a spectacular opening ceremony involving 1600 competitors, with a light show, fireworks and present day Olympians. It was a fantastic sight to see them jump to the music, even in the rain, whilst lasers danced overhead.

The next day it was onto the pool in Swansea where there were two days of fierce competition, great camaraderie and new friends. The opening ceremony was again elegant and well run with Luke Scott and Lawrence McGivern captaining the teams. After 2 days of exhausting swimming, Ireland took away 1 Gold, 1 silver and 2 Bronze medals, all from Ulster swimmers. The gold from Charlotte Hall of Larne with a new UK Schools record in the M.D. 100 Breast stroke, a silver for Emily Heyburn of COB in the 200 Fly, and bronzes for Katie Reid of Lisburn in the 100 Back and for James Hamilton of Larne in the M.D. 100 Breast stroke.

The team rested on the Sunday and watched the exciting track cycling and they then flew home that night, exhausted but satiated. This was a wonderful competition with some truly great organisation mixing able bodied athletes with disabled in 14 sports.

If you get the  chance to go next year, grab it!
