| Hat-trick of Medals for McMahon at European Youth Olympic Festival |
|
Leander swimmer, Sycerika McMahon has collected yet another medal at the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Tampere, Finland, finishing 3rd in the final of the girls 400m Individual Medley in a fantastic new personal best time of 4:53.15 to add to her Silver & Bronze medals won already this week in the 400m Freestyle & 200m Individual Medley respectively. McMahon swam brilliantly in a thrilling final and was unlucky to miss out on 2nd place, being beaten by the smallest of margins by Carlotta Toni of Italy who touched in 4:53.14. Spain’s Cristina Garcia took gold in 4.50.06.
McMahon also competed in the 200m Freestyle and qualified for the B Final following a 2:07.75 in the heats . The decision was taken by the Irish coaching staff to withdraw her from this race in order to best prepare for the 400 IM final, a strategy that ultimately proved very successful. Speaking from Rome ahead of the World Championships, which commence next Sunday, Swim Ireland National Performance Director Peter Banks hailed McMahon’s achievements as outstanding. “Congratulations to Sycerika and her coach, Bobby Madine, on these fantastic results and medals. There have been great performances all-round by the Irish team and I wish them the best of luck for the remainder of the competition.Dan Sweeney from Cork also put in a fantastic performance in the heats of the 100m Breaststroke and qualified for the B final in a time of 1:06.63. In the final, the Sunday’s Well swimmer swam well but finished outside the top three places. Also swimming today was Jordan Sloan who finished just outside his personal best in the heats of the 50m Freestyle. The Bangor swimmer did not progress to the finals however and will now concentrate on the 100m Backstroke tomorrow, his final event of the EYOF. Nicholas Quinn of Castlebar had a rest day today and will conclude his competition tomorrow in the 400m Individual Medley.
At home, the Irish Youth and Senior Championships got underway today at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin with Ireland’s top swimmers competing for honours over the 4 days of competition. Today saw Michael Dawson of Ard’s Swimming Club set a new Irish Junior Record in the semi-final of the 50m Breaststroke (28.97) and later break that record again in the final in a time of 28.89. Full results are included below for all events today. Further information can be found on Swim Ireland’s website www.swimireland.ie Taken from a swim ireland press release 23rd July 2009
